Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease) is the most common disease occurring in dogs and cats. Regular dental care can prevent this.

Cause

Periodontal disease is an infection resulting from allowing soft plaque and calculus to build up on the tooth surface. The bacteria in the plaque irritate the gum tissue and eventually cause infection in the bone that supports the teeth.

Effects

Pet owners tend to notice bad breath in their pets, but this is the least of our problems. First, the gums become inflamed and painful. Then the bone supporting the tooth becomes infected causing bone loss and loose teeth. If more than 50% of the bone supporting the tooth is lost then the tooth must be extracted. The bacteria causing periodontal disease can also lead to disease in the heart, kidneys, and liver.

Prevention

If the tooth surfaces are kept clean, then the gums will be healthy as well. Homecare such as brushing, Dentacetic Wipes, chewing activities, and special diets will all help prevent dental disease. Professional dental cleaning and oral exam on a regular basis is mandatory to maintain good oral health. The frequency of professional dental cleanings will vary depending on the breed, age of the pet, and the amount of homecare that is provided.
